The Reality of Tactical Production
Tactical production is a discipline that combines demanding production techniques with an emphasis on credibility and authenticity. In an environment where there is no room for error, every detail counts. The demands for scenic fidelity and technical precision are key here. Each production requires careful preparation and the ability to quickly adapt to unexpected changes.
In contrast to traditional productions, where one can rely on post-production edits and CGI effects, tactical productions require maximum control over all aspects already in the preproduction phase. This means that decisions regarding lighting, composition, and space must be made before the first shot. This ensures that the final image will be authentic and credible.
Challenges in the Field
One of the biggest issues faced in tactical production is the unpredictability of the environment. Natural light, weather, and even surrounding sounds can affect the quality and character of the shots. Unlike a controlled studio environment where all conditions are manageable, the field requires a flexible approach and quick decision-making.
In productions for the defense sector, such as NDA projects in the DACH region, we encountered the need to adapt to rapidly changing conditions. The challenge was to ensure consistent light quality during all-day shooting. The solution lay in careful scheduling and the use of mobile lighting units, which allowed for stable illumination of key scenes.
Technical Preparation as a Foundation
Technical preparation is the backbone of every successful tactical production. Before the actual shooting, it is necessary to ensure that all technical equipment is in perfect condition and ready for immediate use. This includes not only cameras and lights but also sound management and special effects equipment.
A typical campaign production usually requires 2–3 weeks of intensive preparation. A team of technicians and production specialists works to ensure that each piece of equipment is calibrated and ready for the specific conditions of the location. For example, in a production involving live fire, it is essential to have safety measures and expert supervision, which requires careful coordination of all involved parties.
The Significance of Location Selection
The location is not just a backdrop but plays a crucial role in the overall impact of the project. Choosing the right place can enhance the credibility and authenticity of the final work. When selecting a location, it is important to consider not only aesthetic aspects but also logistical and safety requirements.
In one of our projects for a tactical optics manufacturer in the DACH region — NDA, we faced the challenge of finding a location that offered not only a visually attractive environment but also a sufficient degree of privacy and security. The choice fell on an abandoned military base, which met all required parameters and allowed us to carry out a complex production without compromising quality.
From the field: During a shoot for the defense sector in the Alps, we faced an unexpected snowstorm. The decision to move the shoot to lower altitudes saved the footage and a day of production time.
Control Over Light and Composition
Light and composition are essential elements of every production. In tactical production, where credibility is emphasized, there is no room for errors. Control over these elements is therefore crucial. A firm grasp of lighting and its adjustments can dramatically affect the atmosphere and mood of the entire project.
In productions for luxury and fashion brands, where attention to detail and precision is paramount, we encountered the necessity to precisely manage lighting conditions. The use of reflectors and diffusers allowed us to create subtle shadows and highlight material textures. In this way, we achieved the desired aesthetic effect, which would not have been possible without careful control over lighting.
The Value of Physical Reality
In an era where digital technologies and CGI effects dominate production processes, physical reality offers invaluable value. Real environments and natural light give images and videos authenticity that cannot be replaced. The decision to shoot in real environments ensures that outputs will appear credible and natural.
Our experience from more than 70 productions carried out in 16 countries across Europe and the USA shows that clients appreciate the authenticity and credibility that working in a physical environment brings. Productions for the defense and security sectors, as well as for luxury brands, confirm that the quality of the final work is significantly influenced by the choice of real environments.
Ultimately, tactical production is about careful planning, quick adaptation, and the ability to effectively manage all aspects of the production process. Every decision is crucial and can significantly impact the success of the entire project. Conscious management of light, space, and technology ensures that the final product will be not only aesthetically impressive but also authentic and credible.
