Composition & Visual Storytelling
Training composition as your main tool — from a thought process to storytelling across a series
Composition is not the rule of thirds. It is how the viewer reads the image.
Composition decides whether the viewer actually reads the image or just glances over it. Whether a portrait feels accidental or has a solid structure. Whether a scene has depth, rhythm and direction — or stays flat.
Composition & Visual Storytelling is an intensive training that turns composition into your main working tool. Not a collection of rules from photography magazines, but a deliberate decision-making system — from the basic tools to the storytelling techniques that hold an entire series together.
The goal is simple: stop puzzling and guessing at every frame. You see a scene, a short thought process runs through your head and you automatically choose the right focal length, distance and angle. Fast, precise, in any situation.
Why it isn't the rule of thirds
The golden ratio and the thirds won't make you a good photographer.
If you thought composition is mainly about the golden ratio, centres and the rule of thirds, we'll quickly cure you of that mistake. The real rules of composition are far more complex than the handbooks suggest — and, crucially, they can be learned as a process, not left to chance.
You'll learn to break out of two-dimensional thinking, start thinking in space and bring depth into the frame. We'll cover rhythm, the language of shapes and the proportion of masses, and how to use them consciously. How to place one person or several, when detail makes sense and when a distant shot serves you better. And how to make the same scene tender, dynamic, deep, epic — or mysterious.

Training format
One weekend. Two intensive days.
Programme
From building the image to telling the story.
Day 1Composition as a system
Day one builds the foundation — the ability to see a scene spatially and decide within a second. You'll learn to work with depth, rhythm, the language of shapes and the proportion of masses, and to understand how elements in the frame communicate.
We'll go through focal length, angle and distance as the three levers that steer the meaning of a shot — and show them in practice.
Focal length
Which focal length creates a romantic, intimate mood and which guarantees drama and dynamics. How focal length changes proportions, the relationship of a figure to space and the perception of depth.
Angle and height
The difference a change of angle makes — what happens when you lie on the ground and when you climb above the scene. When a low angle adds power and when a high angle tells a different story.
Crop and tilt
When and how to crop, when to leave space instead, and what a tilted frame is for. How the crop changes tension and leads the eye.
Direction and gaze
When to shoot a person from the front, above or behind, when to shoot through foliage or foreground — and when it works against you.
One person or several
How to build a single figure or a group, keep the hierarchy, readability and a firm compositional line.
Day 2Visual language and storytelling in a series
Day two is devoted to visual language. One strong shot is not enough — we'll show you how to shoot a series that tells a story. We'll work with alternating shot types, with emotion and with building tension.
You'll learn how to keep a series consistent and interesting, how to grab the viewer and never let go. We alternate theory blocks with practice so you get composition and visual language under your skin — and practical assignments let you verify you can carry the theory into your own work.

Who the training is for
For those held back by composition.
The training is for photographers and creators who already have the technique but feel their images lack structure, depth and pull. For portrait, fashion, advertising, lifestyle and product photographers, for filmmakers and cinematographers, and for small creative teams that want to unify their visual language and work faster and more confidently on set.
It is not a course for complete beginners. You don't have to be a master of technique, but you should handle the basics of the camera and know why you want to move forward in composition.
