Why Product Photography Shouldn't Look Like a Catalog

Product photography with soul: how to avoid catalog-like sterility and create a visual story that sells.

The Importance of Product Photography

Product photography plays a crucial role in marketing and sales strategy. It is the medium that can introduce a product to the market with a compelling story and emotions that set it apart from the competition. However, we often encounter photographs that look like they are straight out of a catalog — sterile, lifeless, and lacking individuality. Such images can damage the brand's perception and diminish its value. So why is it important that product photography doesn't look like a catalog?

Creating Context Versus Catalog Sterility

Catalog photos tend to be simple and straightforward, focused on the product in a sterile environment. This approach often lacks the ability to engage the viewer and evoke a sense of need. Creating context and a story around the product is key. For instance, when photographing fashion, it is important to show how the product behaves in real life, how it appears in different environments, and what story it brings. In one of our productions, instead of the usual studio setting, we chose an exterior location in the historic center of Prague. This not only highlighted the product's elegance but also created a story that resonated with the target audience.

Light as a Tool for Storytelling

Light is one of the strongest tools a photographer has at their disposal. In catalog photography, it is often used just to ensure clarity and visibility, but product photography should use light to create atmosphere and emphasize the product's key features. For example, when photographing luxury watches, we used natural sunset light, which gave the scene a warm and premium feel. This decision not only brought greater emotional depth but also increased the perceived value of the product.

Creative Composition Versus Simplicity

Catalog shots often rely on simple and clear composition, which clearly displays the product but lacks originality. Creative composition can captivate the viewer and hold their attention longer. In one of our fashion segment productions, we used layering technique — the model was surrounded by objects that together with her formed a story. Every element of the scene contributed to the overall message and added depth to the visual.

Space as Part of the Story

The catalog environment is often neutral to avoid distracting from the product. However, space can be a powerful tool for creating context and enhancing the attractiveness of the photograph. When working on a campaign for a luxury interior accessory, we chose the space of a modern loft with industrial elements. This choice not only increased the product's value but also perfectly matched its design and target audience. Here, space was not just a backdrop but an active part of the story we wanted to tell.

From Practice: A Decision That Changed the Outcome

During a production for [luxury fashion brand, NDA], we faced a dilemma between a simple catalog photo and a complex scenario with a story. We opted for the latter, which led to a 30% increase in social media engagement and a 15% increase in sales in the first month after the campaign.

Post-Production as a Tool, Not a Substitute

In catalog photography, there is often a reliance on extensive post-production to highlight the product and remove imperfections. This approach can lead to an artificial and unnatural result. Our philosophy is based on the belief that the value of the visual is decided already in the preproduction phase, where light, space, and intent are established. Post-production should serve to fine-tune details, not replace a missing intent. For example, in one project, we achieved a significant improvement in product perception without resorting to excessive retouching.

Product photography that stands out from the catalog style has the ability to tell a story and create an emotional connection with the viewer. It is an investment in the brand that pays off not only in higher sales but also in long-term image building. Therefore, it is important to abandon the sterile catalog approach and focus on creating visuals that have soul and character.
