SQUADRON — case study

Production dossier

SQUADRON

A production inspired by the Czechoslovak airmen of the RAF. A historic aircraft, authentic uniforms and cinematic light — the moments between departure, duty and return. Not the action of war, but the human dimension of a generation that left to fight for the freedom of its own country.

Project file

A visual world as the production foundation.

SQUADRON did not begin with the machinery. It began with the story — with the men and women who left home, crossed the borders of occupied Europe and entered a war knowing that return was not certain. We set out to capture not the combat, not the dogfights, but the silence between them.

The whole production was built around an authentic historic aircraft at an airfield, where the atmosphere of British bases of the early 1940s came to life. Every detail — from uniforms and props to the work with light — served one goal: to create a photograph that reads as a stilled film frame.

"No reenactment. No documentary record. A photograph that works like a film poster — a scene from a war drama that was never filmed."

This was not a reconstruction of a historical event.
It was about capturing the emotion of a generation that left to fight for the freedom of its own country.
Project brief — SQUADRON
SQUADRON — challenge

Challenge

Not a reenactment.
A stilled film frame.

  • Create a series that reads neither as a reconstruction nor a documentary record
  • A film poster, not a historical illustration — a strong narrative hidden in a single frame
  • Authenticity of the setting: a historic aircraft, period uniforms, props — everything must hold up
  • Work with natural light and small gestures, not with grand action

Visual direction

Reality directed by light.

Cinematic realism: working with the natural light of late afternoon and sunset, deep warm tones and a soft haze. Every frame built like a film poster — a dramatic atmosphere without extensive digital intervention.

Instead of grand action scenes we worked with small gestures: putting on a flying helmet, handing over a bag, a look toward the horizon, climbing into the cockpit. It is these details that create a story the viewer completes themselves.

Lighting design

No big rig.
The golden hour.

SQUADRON is built on the natural light of late afternoon and sunset. Instead of a large lighting rig we worked with the direction of the sun, a smoky haze and the silhouettes of the aircraft — a dramatic atmosphere without extensive digital intervention.

The changing weather was not an obstacle but a tool. Clouds, backlight and dust created a depth you cannot build in a studio.

Shadows are not a problem. They are a tool. They give the scene volume and a cinematic register where a flat documentary fails.

Production scope

From concept to delivery — one team, one responsibility.

01

Preproduction

A narrative concept inspired by the Czechoslovak airmen of the RAF, shot list, casting, securing a historic aircraft, period uniforms and props, choosing the airfield and coordinating with the weather.

02

Production

A single production day, 23 March 2024. A team of 8 on set. Working with natural light in changing weather — from afternoon to sunset. Instead of action, small gestures: putting on a helmet, handing over a bag, a look to the horizon, climbing into the cockpit.

03

Finishing

Selection from the series and colour grading in a warm cinematic palette, unifying contrast and atmosphere across the set, and format preparation for editorial, print and online. Minimal digital intervention — the atmosphere was created on set.

04

Delivery

10 final visuals in circulation. Each works on its own; together they tell one story. Full intellectual property rights transfer — no recurring licence fees.

Final assets

Selected outputs.

Each frame alone.
Together, one story.

The series combines historical fidelity with a cinematic visual language. The images capture the machines and uniforms, but above all the atmosphere of a time when courage was not a matter of heroism but of necessity — the story of a generation that took off knowing the way back might not exist.
